Mandie

Hello there.

I suppose you want to know a little more about me and this website. If you don’t, turn back now – there’s still time!

Okay, you’re still here. I’m Mandie and once upon a time I was a marketing coordinator & social media strategist. I enjoyed the work, but the job was making me miserable.

For years I felt like I was stuck in a rut I couldn’t get out of. Even if the typical American dream isn’t for you, when you have all that grown up stuff like benefits and a 401k and an office with your own spinny chair, it can be really scary to walk away.

I started to withdraw from people; become less social. At work I was doing just enough to not get fired. Nothing excited me. I used to sit and dream about vacations I thought I couldn’t afford to take.

Then, a miracle happened. My company got bought out and my position was eliminated.

I knew I was done with the rat race. I took my chance, bought a plane ticket, and started this blog. I had to get out of my comfort zone if I wanted to feel alive again.

Which brings us to the present. I’m currently freelance writing, building WordPress sites & doing other odd jobs for people willing to host & feed me around the world.

In case you’re wondering, no, I don’t have rich parents or a sugar daddy. I managed to save money and pick up a few valuable skills during my time in corporate America. I decided that travel was my goal and I was going to do anything it took to make it a reality.

Being your own boss is scary. And it’s hard. I work much harder now than I did when I had a corporate job. But I’m also 1 gazillion times happier because I’m doing what I love. I’m no longer an indifferent observer – I’m an active participant in my own life. And it’s freaking amazing.

Travel is my way of coming out of my shell and learning to reconnect with people. I’m seeing unbelievable sights and I feel alive every single day.

You’re probably wondering why I don’t have one of those cool ‘About Me’ pictures on a mountain. Well, it’s because I travel by myself and it’s really hard to get good selfies with my big camera. Also I’m really unphotogenic so when I find a picture where I don’t look like a rabid spider monkey, I just roll with it.

In regards to travel, I’m not a permanent nomad, although I did give up my apartment and sell all my furniture. I have someone special back home, so I have to pop back in occasionally. 🙂

Are you still here? Okay, what else…let’s see, here are some random facts for you:

I’m kind of obsessed with Mindy Kaling. She’s my hero and the one person I want to meet more than anything. Also Elizabeth Gilbert, but she’s so cool I’m not sure she’s even real. Mindy Kaling seems like a more realistic goal.

I love animals, especially horses. And cats. And dolphins. I promise, I’m really not a 12 year old, although my sense of humor might sometime indicate otherwise.

I’m a foodie and I can put away a bottle of wine like nobody’s business.

I’m 32 years old, which is kind of old to be traveling alone for the first time, but guess what? I don’t really care. I’m not going to let a silly thing like age keep me from going for what I want. Plus, I can still drink all these hostel kids under the table. Bring it. (Just give me a couple days to recover afterwards.)

My travel bucket list includes everywhere except North Korea and Afghanistan. I’ll probably avoid Ukraine for a while, too. Let’s just go with everywhere that’s not currently a war zone or being invaded by Russia.

If there’s anything I haven’t covered, just ask! If you’re feeling especially stuck (be it in a job or relationship or something else holding you back) get in touch with me! We can sit and kvetch and work through all the schnitzel that’s gumming up your life.

Yeah, I’m not really sure what that meant either. I’m trying not to cuss so much so my mom will stop emailing me about the appropriateness of my language. But you get the gist, hopefully.

Oh, you can also stalk me in all the usual places, if you like: Facebook, Twitter, Google+.

Happy travels!

“Life begins outside your comfort zone.”
